G'day !

Today is Australia Day

To mark the occasion , here are six pics showing how a typical Aussie straight guy will celebrate , using the first verse of the National Anthem ,

"Advance Australia Fair" , as a theme

Footnotes will provide background for those not familiar with Oz and it's "cultcha"

So pull on a pair of shorts , grab a stubbie and join the blokes around the barbie while the sheilas make a salad

Australia Day commemorates the first European settlement , in the form of convicts from England , at Sydney Cove in 1788
( The Aboriginal people have lived on the continent for over 40,000 years , but let's not spoil the fun with such minor facts )

The song Advance Australia Fair was first performed in 1878 .

It fell into relative obscurity , before being declared the National Anthem in 1984 .

Most Aussies over 25 ( being too old to have learned the new anthem at school )
have difficulty remembering the words to the first verse , let alone the second !

Australia is either called by it's full name ( often pronounced Aus-tray-ah )

or shortened to Oz , while the Australian people are called Aussies

( pronounced Oz-eez )

Stubbie : Bottle of beer - same circumference as normal bottle , but shorter in height

Barbie : Barbeque . Despite the famous TV ads shown in the USA , no-one in Australia "adds another shrimp to the barbie"
They are called prawns here !

Traditional barbie foods are sausages and steaks with onions , cooked by the men

who congregate together discussing footy , sex and more footy ( football )

Shielas ( an old term for women ) make the salad in the kitchen and

bring beers to the men
